Ayurvedic View of the Liver
In Ayurveda, the liver is closely linked to Pitta dosha, the energy of heat, transformation, and metabolism. The liver’s fiery nature enables it to transform rasa dhatu (the nutritive fluid derived from food) into rakta dhatu (blood). During this process, it also detects and holds back ama (toxic waste) that may form when food is improperly digested or when lifestyle is imbalanced.
When the liver is working optimally, nutrients are absorbed efficiently, blood remains pure, and the body functions with vitality. But when liver function is disturbed, digestion slows, the skin may show signs of imbalance, blood quality weakens, and circulation can suffer.
Cholesterol and Metabolism
Ayurveda recognizes the liver as the primary source of cholesterol in the body. Nearly 90% of cholesterol is produced by the liver itself, while only 10% comes from food. This highlights the importance of keeping the liver clear and balanced for healthy fat metabolism, hormonal balance, and overall vitality.
