Understanding Rakttapradar: Types, Causes, and Herbal Remedies for Excessive Menstrual Bleeding

Rakttapradar (Menorrhagia) is defined as cyclic bleeding at normal intervals, which is either excessive in amount (more than 80ml) or duration (more than seven days) or both. (D.C. Dutta).

Acharya Charak said that Pradar is a disease in which blood comes in excess amounts.

Acharya Madhav opined Rakta, when discharged in excess amount per vagina; disease is known as Asrigdar.

Acharya Vagbhatas opined that when blood is either during or in the intermenstrual period, it is called Asrigdara, Pradar, or Raktayoni.

Types of Raktapradar:

1) Vataja

2) Pittaja

3) Kaphaja

4) Sannipataja

Cause of Rakttapradara:

Excessive use of Lavana (salty), acidic materials (Amla), Guru (heavy)

Katu — which causes the burning (hot), the meat of wild animals and meat of aquatic animals.

Excessive traveling (Atiyana), walking sorrow, mental trauma, day sleeping, abortion, menopause, injury, etc.
