Rituacharya is the traditional Ayurvedic practice and is comprised of two words, “Ritu” which means season, and “charya,” which implies Regimen or discipline. Ritucharya consists of a lifestyle and Ayurvedic diet routine to cope with the bodily and mental impacts caused by seasonal changes, as recommended by Ayurveda.
According to Ayurveda, the entire year is divided into two periods; the first six months contain three seasons: Uttarayana, and the cold months, which contain the seasons of Sharad, Hemanta, and Shishira. And Dakshinayana, the warm months, includes the seasons Vasanta, Grishma, and Varsha.
There are six seasons explained in Ayurveda.
- Sisira Ritu
- Vasanta Ritu
- Greeshma Ritu
- Varsha Ritu
- Sharat Ritu
- Hemanta Ritu
Hemanta Ritucharya is a term used in Ayurveda, which refers to the winter season. “Ritucharya” is a Sanskrit term that translates to “seasonal regimen,” and it describes the practice of adjusting your lifestyle habits and routines to align with the changes in nature during different seasons.
During the Hemanta Ritucharya, or winter season, the weather is cold and dry, and the days are shorter. Therefore, Ayurveda recommends certain dietary and lifestyle practices during this season to help balance the body and protect it from cold and dryness. Some of these practices include:
Eating warm, nourishing, and easy-to-digest foods such as soups, stews, and cooked vegetables.
Drinking warm herbal teas such as ginger tea, cinnamon tea, and licorice tea helps keep the body warm and hydrated.
Applying warm oil to the body nourishes and protects the skin from the dryness of the season.
Engaging in gentle exercise such as yoga and walking to improve circulation and boost immunity.
Get plenty of rest and sleep to support the body’s natural healing and rejuvenation processes.
By following these practices, you can help keep your body and mind balanced and healthy during the Hemanta Ritucharya, or winter season.
